"For the airlines, it's about making you pay the most you're ready to pay, which is the antithesis of what the customer wants," says Joe Brancatelli, journalist of the travel website JoeSentMe.com. On a single airplane, he adds, there can be more than a dozen pricing divisions Plus, Brancatelli adds, each of those tourists may be spending for a diverse array of a la carte add-ons such as precedence boarding or baggage fees. "The key thing to understand about flight ticket charges," he says, "is that the ticket price is where you begin, not where you end."

With summer right throughout the corner, U.S. News spoke to Brancatelli and other travel management specialists about the best ways to stretch your tour budget. Here are seven insider codes to booking budget flights:

• Always book the flight for seven weeks in advance.

There are specific times of the year when it's much more costly to travel — think major festivals, long weekends, and your state's school holiday weeks. For domestic tickets and tours to the Caribbean, the Southwest Airlines site is a must-visit location. Southwest allows affordable tickets beyond its route map — and it doesn't let its tickets to be sold or displayed on third-party sites like LatinOFare, and Google Flights. As such, you should regularly check Southwest before scheduling a domestic economy or Caribbean itinerary on another airline.

Most of the websites that we decided allow users to book tickets immediately on their platform or the airline's site. LatinOFare only lets you book your flight tickets through OTAs, meaning you'll have to make the sale on a website that may be unknown to you, like Flights Mojo, Globehunters, or TravelMint. That shouldn't be a problem in most maximum cases, but it can perform a problem if you need to modify or cancel your flight tickets (some airline companies charge more to change a ticket purchased through an OTA).

If you are flying with friends or family, do not search for or buy multiple flight tickets in a single shopping. Airline companies regularly show the most expensive flight ticket price in a group of tickets, which suggests you will end up spending more money.

For example, if you have four members in your family and you are searching for four seats, the airline will find four seats collectively and show your charge based on the most expensive ticket price. So if seat A is $200, seats B and C are $300, and seat D is $400, it will price those flight tickets as $400 each alternatively of adding up the different ticket costs. If the price variation is bigger, that translates into a sizeable extra cost.

For that purpose, always search for flight tickets as a single person. Eventually, in the checkout manner, you will be able to pick your seats, so you and your family are sitting concurrently. And even if you end up not alongside one another, that’s a fair deal for saving a few hundred dollars.
