Salvador’s Pelourinho

Salvador is probably one of the oldest cities in South America. This part of the city called The Cidade Alta (Upper Town) has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage site for preserving its unique colorful collection of 17th- and 18th-century colonial buildings. It is the finest ensemble of architecture in South America. Beautiful churches and monasteries are dotted around this wonderful town, which also has shades of Portugal’s heritage, culture, and riches. Make sure to visit the opulent city church called São Francisco, which built in the early 1700s and has intricate gold carvings all over.
