Things To Know When Traveling To Kuwait For The First Time

If you were to place a world map before you, close your eyes, put your finger on the map and travel to the place that it lands on, would you do it? Well, if that place is Kuwait, you certainly should. The capital of Kuwait, Kuwait City, is littered with stunning architecture, museums with centuries old artefacts and beaches where you can bask under the sun and get a tan to sport back home. Moreover, the Kuwaiti culture and food are rich and diverse and you can never have enough of it. However, given its history and location in the Middle East, it can be a volatile region, (remember the first Gulf War in 1991). Check with your country’s travel advisory before making any plans.

A little history about Kuwait

Kuwait was one of the first Arab countries to establish a constitution in 1962, making it a constitutional emirate. It prospered through the oil business in the 1960s and 70s. However, after the First Gulf War, The United Nations helped the country to rebuild and prosper again.

What can you expect in Kuwait?

Kuwait has an authentic Arabic vibe unlike UAE and Qatar, which are more cosmopolitan. You can see the undertones of the Arabic culture in its mosques, museums, souks, bazaars and food. Get your hands on local products like kohl (eyeliner), traditional Kuwaiti jewelry, dresses, spices, pumice stones and lots more.

Excited? But wait, here’s what you should know before you travel to Kuwait for the first time.

  1. Kuwait is a Muslim country. Though, the locals make up only about 24% of the population. This means, the culture is a fascinating mix of Western and Islamic culture. However, always respect and abide by local customs, traditions and laws.
  2. Alcohol and pork are banned and unacceptable to the local authorities. If they find you in possession of these items, you can land in some serious trouble.
  3. Don’t indulge in any disputes with locals, as you might end up in a legal soup and barred from leaving the country.
  4. Unlike some Middle East countries, Kuwait has a relaxed dress code. However, women should avoid wearing revealing shorts and sleeveless dresses. Bikinis are okay at hotel pools but are a big no-no on the beaches and public places.
  5. Beware, Kuwait has strict traffic rules, which can end up in heavy fines and even jail. So, unless you don’t know the roads or the culture, it’s best to venture out with a local driver or taxi.
  6. Stick to the basics. Kuwait has a glam side to it with high-rise buildings, world-class malls and flashy cars. So, therefore don’t venture into places or markets you are not familiar with. The bottom line: Research well before you go.
  7. Avoid going out alone at night. Tourists, particularly women, should avoid walking out at night as there have been cases of harassment and misconduct.
  8. Ready for extreme temperatures? Kuwait is a gulf country and so it experiences high temperatures. Both in the summers and winters. And since, it is bang in the middle of the desert, sand and dust storms are very common. It is best to check the weather before planning your day.
